A couple of short hero-esque stories from spiffy draftsman John Welding. He's a confident & accomplished comic artist.
The 1st story, Dead Wood, is well, nicely drawn & everything, but is nothing that stimulates curiosity. It smacks of an earlier, less experienced time in John's artistic endeavours. The plot leads you into territory that is reasonably familiar. I guess it isn’t helped by the splash page being followed by a page of essentially static midshots of a character waiting. The time does not pass slowly, as is meant to be conveyed, as the panels are too simple; you just skip them.
The second story, Philosophical Iron is a little more interesting as a concept has as more chance to have 'legs'. I would rather like to see more of the character concerned. Good wee fight scene, good pacing & page design. Another little 'twist in the tale' story, but in a more amusing vein - pity the final page is on the back of the comic... you tend to stumble across the twist before the story.
Mmmmmm nice use of black.
mooncat.
